Didula Tharusara on breaking into the music industry

By Venessa Anthony

Didula Tharusara, a 20-year-old Sri Lankan singer, songwriter, and music composer, has had an avid interest in music since childhood. Following his primary education at Sri Sumangala College, Panadura and his secondary education at Ananda College, Colombo, he jumped on a career in music soon after graduation. He currently has over 11,000 followers on Instagram and 13,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

The Morning Brunch had a chat with Didula on his musical journey and more. Here’s what he had to say.

What inspired you to get into music?

Musician Didula Tharusara

Music has been in my body since childhood, but it was only after my O-Levels that I felt the need to move forward. Going to Ananda College, Colombo for my A-Levels was the main reason for that. At that time, my interest increased with some projects I got to work on professionally, like Kuweni – Live in Concert and Rhythm of the Maroons.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in your career?

Actually, there were many challenges on this journey to date. Among them, the biggest challenge was balancing music and education. The reason for that is that I had the opportunity to work with many artists during my childhood. I have been working as a songwriter and composer since 2019. So most of the time, it was a huge challenge to balance music and education, but I believe that I did it all well.

Which song of yours is closest to your heart and why?

There are about 30 songs that I have written or composed. Among them, my favourite song is Midune. The reason I love it very much is that it was a creation that evoked a lot of emotions. It was produced by my friend Lasith Dimithri.

What is the procedure behind your song-making?

There is no specific procedure. I do whatever I do with love and dedication. Most songs I write and produce are full of emotions, so I think that’s my speciality.

How important do you think it is to write original music?

I think any artist should have their own unique creations, because only then can you create your own brand. And I try my best to do that.

What is the message you want to send out with your music?

Most of my songs have very subtle emotions, so I create them for everyone’s enjoyment. And I hope my fans enjoy them.

What is your opinion of the music industry in Sri Lanka?

I am not at a level to talk about the music industry in Sri Lanka, because I have just made my entry into it. But personally, I believe that there are many talented musicians, songwriters, and singers in Sri Lanka. I think that the name “Sri Lanka” can be taken to the global stage soon.

Any plans for 2023?

The year 2023 is a special year for me because, on 29 January, my first single of the year will be released on all digital streaming platforms. And many more collaborations and projects are yet to come. I have a production company called D’ COMP, so I hope to expand it further. Also, I hope to fly abroad for higher studies and I hope that I will be able to accomplish all these things successfully as planned.
