Breaky at The Bread Company

By Anjalika Abeykoon

We have passed The Bread Company quite a few times in Thimbirigasyaya, always deliberating over a good time to visit the little spot located by the road. Finally, we made up our minds one fine Thursday morning and dropped in for breakfast.

We entered into a very busy café which did not look busy at all from the outside. We were greeted by one of the Co-founders, Prashan Butani, and Tanya, the Head of Marketing, also joined us for a small chat.

The Bread Company, which is part of Sovereign German Restaurant, kick-started at the Good Market six years ago in a very small scale, with only two types of German seeded bread. Prashan’s wife and Co-founder Madeline and her father are from Germany. Due to the increasing demand for their bread at the Good Market, the couple decided to open the café and have been running it ever since. Currently, The Bread Company operates as an “all-day breakfast” cafe and bakery. There are seven types of bread options, many varieties of value-added, homemade meat products, desserts, and many beverage options on top of the breakfast items. The important thing to note is that except for a few items such as flour, everything at the cafe is locally sourced.

Although their main focus is to serve families and children, they are more than happy to welcome corporate meetings and couples at the cafe as well. Currently, The Bread Company is eagerly working on a lunch menu and the management is planning to introduce it as soon as possible to their customers.

Here are the three things we tried at The Bread Company.

Beetroot and orange juice

While waiting for the main breakfast order, we decided to cleanse ourselves with a freshly pressed glass of juice. So we ordered a beetroot and orange juice. We didn’t know what to expect, especially with beetroot in it, but it was certainly way beyond our expectations. The beetroot and orange apparently make a great combination when blended together in the right amounts. It was slightly sweet and very colourful, and we loved it! Having this healthy juice early in the morning left us happy and refreshed; it tasted amazing and left our tongues purple.

Strammer Max

We picked Strammer Max, one of the items listed under the all-day breakfast menu. The dish consisted of two slices of toasted bread topped with three perfect layers of crispy bacon, shredded chicken, and mushrooms, and finished with two perfectly sunny-side-up eggs with nice and runny egg yolks. The most amazing thing about this dish was that it was not bland – instead, there were lots of spices induced to the dish to suit the local palate. We especially loved the fact that this dish was rich with generous pieces of crispy bacon. We enjoyed the Strammer Max a lot, and it left our tummies full and very satisfied.

Hearty breakfast

First, we were slightly surprised to see only an omelette coming our way. Up close, we were once again surprised to see pieces of bread embedded in the omelette itself.

However, the real surprise was revealed once we started digging in. There were bacon, mushrooms, carrots, and tomatoes, perfectly spiced and stuffed inside the omelette made of three eggs. We love how The Bread Company was creative with the bread by adding small pieces of bread to the omelette without serving it as a side. This again is a perfectly filling breakfast and, of course, if you are game, it could be even served as a lunch main.
