Dining at Coffee Colombo

Try these three

Coffee Colombo is a cozy spot down Marine Drive which we came upon recently.

Though Coffee Colombo is a relatively new addition to the food stops in the stretch of Marine Drive, it is a part of the budget hotel Euro Lanka which has been around for quite some time.

Coffee Colombo, which was kick-started last November by Nivetha Sivakumar, was re-launched in April and took Instagram by storm; especially because of the novelty item which was unique on their menu; coffee cones.

Though at first the menu consisted only of coffee brewed with Lavazza, there has been a new product addition every week. The menu consists of a range of Italian dishes with a twist of Sri Lankan.

Without further ado, we decided to let Indika, the General Manager at Coffee Colombo, take us through the menu.

Item #1: Strawberry dash tea

We were quite parched when we entered the cafe, so we decided to try out the Strawberry Dash Tea – a mock-tail which was on the extensive menu at Coffee Colombo. The drink was made out of strawberry syrup, sprite, ice, and of course fresh strawberries. There was a strong, sweet taste to the drink which made it very refreshing and just the one to quench our thirst.

Item #2: Chili chicken fries

We were told that the chili chicken fries are a fast moving item at the cafe, so we were determined to give it a go. The fries came in a small beaker topped with melted cheese. The surprise came when we finally dug in because in the midst of all the fries was the minced chili chicken. The chicken added a dash of spiciness to the entree which would have otherwise been sweet because of the cheese. We enjoyed this little treat and if a person is only to consume this beaker filled with chili chicken fries, it is still enough to fill a tummy.

Item #3: Penne puttanesca

Moving onto the mains of the menu, we ordered a serving of penne puttanesca. Penne puttanesca is an authentic dish made with penne pasta, olives, capers, oregano, basil, bell peppers, a generous amount of tomatoes, and a splash of olive oil, accompanied by a basket of French baguettes by the side which had been baked in the kitchen. The anchovies were omitted from this dish which made it Neapolitan puttanesca, which is also vegan. For an all vegetarian dish, we enjoyed this tasty morsel very much and were quite full.

Bonus: Peppermint dolce latte

Next, we tried a special something which could pass for a drink and a dessert both, which is what took Instagram by a storm. Hence, we got ourselves a peppermint dolce latte, which came in a waffle cone topped with whip cream and caramel sauce. The true surprise came when we sipped on the sweet latte filled inside the cone because the cone was coated with chocolate.
