Although the whole world is set to celebrate a more sombre Christmas than most this season with the pandemic still in full force, little moments are going to make all the difference, and nothing evokes festive spirit like music can.
Festive Sounds at Hilton Colombo is one of those little Christmas activities which draws you into the moment and helps you appreciate the beauty of the season.
Taking place at the Hilton lobby till 25 December, Festive Sounds at Hilton Colombo primarily features the musical talent of husband and wife team Tilanka Jayamanne and Lydia Goonetilleke Jayamanne playing a combo of the flute and the violin.
Both Tilanka and Lydia are professionally classically trained musicians, who met each other through their love of music. Lydia and Tilanka have both explored various genres of music in their performances including jazz, pop, and R&B. The versatile duo have a wide repertoire.
Commenting on Festive Sounds at Hilton Colombo, Lydia shared that 2020 marks their fourth year of performing together at Festive Sounds at Hilton Colombo. “It’s always been a good experience working with Hilton Colombo. This year’s theme is ‘Home for Christmas’ and shows coming home in a boat. We’re playing in the lobby at the front so it’s what people see as they enter.”
Tilanka shared his thoughts on this Christmas in this uncertain time, saying: “I feel that we should still have the heart and the kindness to enjoy this Christmas, but still be responsible at the same time. Christmas is a joyous season whatever said and done, but we must strike a balance and be safe while enjoying ourselves.”
Speaking as musicians in a troubled time for the entertainment industry, Tilanka and Lydia encouraged musicians to be creative with sharing their music and to pursue sharing their music online. Lydia commented that, in general, the creative mindset has really come out during lockdown and at home, and there are many creative ways for musicians to share their music with the world.
Festive Sounds is taking place till 25 December with Tilanka and Lydia performing each evening from 7.15 to 8 p.m. From 20 to 25 December, Festive Sounds at Hilton Colombo will also feature sing-alongs from 8 to 8.45 p.m. with the Old Joes’ Choir (20, 21 December), Voiced Out (22, 23 December), and Choro Calibre (24, 25 December).
