Finding harmony between elegance and comfort

Fashion designer Yohani Hewage on showing off her personality and style

Content creator and fashion designer Yohani Hewage has made quite a stir with her social media accounts, and is now known for her vivid feed, dotted with aesthetic food pics and gorgeous bucket-list travel destinations. She has a passion for all things food and travel, not to mention fashion! At just 24, she is the founder of her own clothing line Yoshy, which specialises in creating custom wear and glamorous sarees.

The Morning Brunch reached out to her to learn more about her brand, maintaining a social media blog, and some fashion tips.

Hewage believes that running a fashion label has seriously upped her credit as a fashion influencer, as she knows what’s hot and what’s not at all times. The outfits she promotes to her audience are all in style and feature the latest trends – not to mention that Hewage is so photogenic, all the outfits she features look like must-haves!

“I have a sixth sense for fashion and showing off my personality and stylishness,” she told us, adding that when it comes to choosing what’s worthy of being on her feed, she decides based on whether they are comfortable as well as stylish.

“I prefer comfort in everything I wear. I like to dress casually most of the time,” she commented. For all those looking to be stylish, she advised developing a signature style, as that way one can adapt to the trend and always make sure it puts them in their comfort zone.

While she always looks on point, Hewage explained that being “trendy” is never her biggest concern.

“I’m not a person who always goes with trends. If a piece of clothing is comfortable and easy to care for, then I’ll stand by it, and it will become a wardrobe staple,” she shared. Sustainability is a core value of hers, which leads her to be far from brand-conscious; while you’ll see her promoting a certain label on her feed, she does her research on the brand before taking it to the internet.

“I tend to invest wisely and reasonably in my wardrobe and I’m not shy about repeating clothes,” she stated, advising us to do the same. “A capsule wardrobe – a limited selection of interchangeable clothing pieces that complement each other – is the way to go!”

She recommended a strong blazer and pair of heels as a killer outfit that is certain to help you express your personality. “You can even adapt it to your choice of style by mixing patterns, textures, or materials around – never be afraid of being judged.”

On this note, we asked her about her sense of style, what she deems fashionable, and her key to always looking put-together.

“My style is very fluid – depending on my emotions and feelings, it’s constantly changing and evolving,” she explained, adding that she simply just wishes to express who she is through her sense of style and outfit choices.

On her page, as well as her brand, she features any and all articles of clothing that she deems wardrobe staples – jeans, tops, sarees, cute dresses, you name it. She may keep things simple, but her execution is flawless.

“If I had to describe my personal style, I would say it’s simple and elegant – I generally wear one simple accessory that significantly impacts my outfit. You don’t need much to carry. Something like a watch, pair of earrings, or minimalist chain would do. I personally prefer gold jewellery – I find it goes a long way to elevate an outfit.”

Her focus may be casual fashion, but there’s nothing casual about her approach to fashion content creation. Speaking more about this, as well as her brand, she told us that she has found the journey to be interesting and exciting.

“It’s been pretty cool so far and I’m grateful for the doors it has opened for me. I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with many brands and met many new faces, and in 2023, I will continue to work on establishing my brand,” she shared, adding that she has many big dreams and aspirations for 2023 that she hopes will see the light.
