Sarah Hettiarachchi, skilled in the art of macramé and handmade jewellery, took her passions to the launch of a small business on Instagram @bhedee.knickknacks. Although she currently works in the non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector as a communications associate, her heart lies with the creative industry and, in her downtime, she tinkers with making intricate jewellery.

The Morning Brunch caught up with her for a chat about her business, the festive season, and more. Here’s what she had to say.

How did you get into the art of macramé?

Entrepreneur and jewellery maker Sarah Hettiarachchi

Since I was young, I was into DIY and handcrafting. Although I was gifted the talent from my mom and my grandma, I only really got into doing macramé as a hobby during the lockdown as a means of keeping my mental health steady. I researched the art of macramé and how to turn it into a flourishing business, and found styles and concepts that are trendy and very much in demand at the moment. After creating a few pieces and showing them off to my friends, they made me realise I had an actual knack for it, and once they had instilled belief in myself, I began my business.

What are some products that you offer?

I mostly focus on earrings and anklets. These are made out of beads and thread. I mostly focus on macramé and crochet designs. I also love creating chunky, loud, statement pieces. It’s easy to buy mass produced items in the market, but I believe my pieces have a special place in the handmade industry.

Do you offer customisation?

Yes, I do custom designs. I talk to the customer and follow their design ideas. Although it is mostly what the customer wants, I always try to incorporate a small touch of my own personal style to the finished product as well.

You use eco-friendly products in your designs. Do you believe it is important to be environmentally responsible in your practice?

I’m a very big believer in eco-friendly products. I started the venture with the hope of raising awareness about eco-friendly production. I try to practise it as much as I can. Mass production can cause damage to the environment and it’s important to be cautious in this regard, from what we eat to what we wear.

Christmas is a time of giving. Do you believe a personalised gift as such would make the best gift?

Definitely. Personalised presents add a sense of love and thoughtfulness that anyone would appreciate, especially when it comes to statement jewellery. I strongly believe personalised gifts are the best thing that you can give your loved ones during the season. Add a special touch to the usual mundane jewellery available on the market.

How are you managing business with the festive rush?

It’s challenging, not because of the festive rush, but with the current situation in the country; although that makes it more special and rewarding. I’m currently facing these challenges with much hope for the future.

 Got any plans for 2023?

Yes, definitely; if God wills it, I have so much hope for the future. The new year will see designs with an Asian twist and a few other special elements. I have many – perhaps ambitious – plans for 2023 and I pray they come to pass.
