Layla Gonaduwa strays from conceptualisation

Layla Gonaduwa, in her latest body of work, strays from conceptualisation, and instead introduces simple, poetic jot-downs, diarised alongside the collection, which is currently displayed at Barefoot Gallery Colombo.

The exhibition will be open until 14 January 2023, and is shaped by the current political and socio-economic climate in Sri Lanka. Gonaduwa is subtle and quiet with her material usage and symbolism, and observes, questions, and challenges the psyche with her paintings, text-based illustrations, diarised drawings and writings, sculpture, poetry, fired enamel, jewellery, wood-cut, and print.

Gonaduwa’s work is thought-provoking, and her work as an interdisciplinary artist with a cathartic and haptic creative process is clear in her latest collection, where the combination of media evokes a mixture of emotions.
