Remembering actor and radio announcer Alfred Perera

Veteran actor and senior radio announcer Alfred Perera passed away on Sunday (20) at the age of 93, and the film and media industries are paying tribute to him for his contributions over the years.

Perera was a senior news reader attached to the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) for a lengthy period and is best known as the creator and host of the radio programme Vinoda Samaya. Alfred Perera served as a long-term translator for the Parliament of Sri Lanka and also headed the Sinhala unit of the Filipino-based Veritas Radio.

He also acted in a number of films such as Sanda Nega Eddi (1966), Maruwa Samaga Wase (1977), and Sinhawa Atharin (2015) and television dramas like Kumarihami, Asalwasiyo, and Kande Gedara.

TV and radio presenter and human skills developer Padmasiri Gunawardena shared on Facebook that Perera joined the arts in 1953 by participating in stage dramas before acting in films and television dramas. He has starred in a total of 11 films.

“He was popular among everyone. He was a very humble person and he enjoyed making everyone smile,” Gunawardena added.
