Tamarra Jayasundera stands for resilience with ‘Mycelium’

Abstract artist Tamarra Jayasundera’s collection “Mycelium” is currently on display at the Barefoot Gallery Colombo, and stands for resilience.

The exhibition opened on 20 October and will be on view until 13 November. Jayasundera’s work is mainly based on layered abstract, utilising copper, brass, and steel sheets with oxidising chemicals and additional mixed media of inks, acrylic, and engraving.

According to the gallery, mycelium is the network of threads found in fungi that decomposes organic material and is found thriving all around us and within us. A similar concept has consumed this work, in a giving-receiving sense. The artist’s collection stands for resilience, while the series marks the expression of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

It is a reflection of the self and captures a year’s journey through the artist’s healing capsule of unravelling trauma cycles, from drowning to breathing underwater. It is a death and a rebirth. It is resilience, recitation, resuscitation, recovery, and rapture.
