Water sports at Port City: Colombo’s first by Lanka Sportreizen

Last Friday (11), Colombo’s first Water Sports Centre launched by Lanka Sportreizen at Port City was officially opened to the public.

Exclusive clubhouse

Lanka Sportreizen, a destination management company, which has been enrolled with the Sri Lankan Tourist Development Authority (SLTDA) for over two decades, is a leading provider of all types of water sports activities. They have brought their expertise over to Port City, creating a space offering an endless array of water sports activities.

The newly established Water Sports Centre offers an incredible selection of activities, including jet scooter rides, open sea diving, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, banana boat rides, tube boat rides, canoeing, water skiing, speed boat rides, deep-sea fishing, angle fishing, and night fishing, to just name a few.

They also offer scuba diving, for which Lanka Sportreizen have been maintaining centres on the southwest coast and the east coast – one of which is its five-star Golden Palm-certified PADI Resort in Sri Lanka.

Having identified a market gap, Lanka Sportreizen has secured this more than ideal location in Colombo’s central and prominent business district. The fully equipped Water Sports Centre will also add great significance to Sri Lanka’s commercial capital.

Speaking to Lanka Sportreizen Chairman Thilak Weerasinghe, he shared: “We aim to make water sports accessible to all, right in Colombo, by providing a variety of activities for individuals and groups. This will make the Water Sports Centre the premier water sports facility for families, athletes, and all members of the public who have an affinity to water sports and entertainment.”

Weerasinghe further noted that the Water Sports Centre will be filling a gap in the market and region, with the centre offering an adventurous line-up of activities to cater to all thrill-seekers and water sport enthusiasts not only in Sri Lanka, but the South Asian region too.

He further mentioned that the Water Sports Centre maintains the highest international quality and safety standards. He provided that all activities are carried out by certified trainers and guides to ensure guests absolute safety.

The centre will offer both beginner and intensive course options for certain activities depending on the experience level of the guests, and being a PADI Five-Star Golden Palm Dive Centre, they offer the full suite of PADI dive courses, snorkelling, open sea drives, pool sessions, scuba diving courses, and lots of fun activities, with an emphasis on safety.

We also spoke to Youth and Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa who was present at the opening event, who shared his thoughts on the project, stating that it will likely fill an unmet need of domestic and international tourists, as there is no availability of water sports activities in the city.

He noted that as there are training courses and by simply allowing the public to access a diverse range of activities of this nature, it is also likely that Sri Lanka will produce more athletes in this different genre of sports. He noted that many of these water sports have championships around the world and if Sri Lankan talent is able to represent the island at these events, it can only lend itself to getting Sri Lanka out there as an ideal destination offering a plethora of activities and opportunities.

While the Water Sports Centre may be for those who are looking for a bit of adventure, if you are simply looking for some down time basking in the gorgeous city skyline, then Lanka Sportreizen has got you covered.

They have introduced an exclusive Clubhouse, which will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. where guests and visitors can enjoy light meals, snacks, or comfortable mocktails as they are serenaded by live jazz music. It is said that they have drawn inspiration from bohemian hotels in Bali, recreating the experiences of the classic clubhouse concept.
