- Kyze Music, Jizzy, and Sayuri on the soon-to-be released track, ‘Ru Nethu’
Music has always had the ability to bring people together regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or any other differences, and local musicians Kyze Music, Jizzy, and Sayuri Wijesekara have come together to encapsulate that idea into a song.
Aside from being a producer, Kyze Music is also a professional DJ who has quite a few gigs under his belt since the start of his career back in 2015 after a remix of Aloke by Iraj that Kyze Music did went viral, bringing his name into the forefront of the music industry. Jizzy, also a DJ, recently collaborated with local artist Dimi3 on a track that garnered over 11,000 views on YouTube. Jizzy is well known for the unique electronic musical element he brings into his collaborative work.
While these two have been in the industry for many years now, Sayuri is very new to the scene – upon being pushed by the two for her impeccable vocals, she agreed to work on this song with them, taking her first step in the industry.
Ru Nethu, their latest collaboration and release, is set to be out by early next month, and tells the story of an intercultural love affair taking place in Sri Lanka, and how the two lovebirds they sing about navigate their relationship in a less-than-accepting world.
Brunch reached out to the three to learn more about the song and their thoughts behind its creation. Here’s what they had to say.
Tell us about the song and the message behind it.
Sayuri: Ru Nethu is a song about love at first sight between a Tamil girl and a Sinhala boy. She daydreams of their wedding, where her wedding dress includes an “osari” and “sal” (shorea robusta) flowers from Sinhala culture and the “selaya” and “mottu” from Tamil culture. She doesn’t care about the problems they would have to face in the future. For them, it was the dawn of a mixed culture and she was finally ready to conquer the new path.
What were some challenges you faced when putting together the song?
Kyze Music: Doing the vocals for this song was a bit tough. Due to the power cuts, Sayuri was not able to do the vocals because the studio was closed, since there was no electricity. Jizzy and I would be awake late into the night on Zoom meetings, touching up the track here and there while killing our sleep schedule, since we couldn’t work on the track in the morning due to the scheduled power outages.
Is this song part of an album to be released in the near future?
Jizzy and Kyze Music: We are thinking about doing an acoustic version of this song soon, but we haven’t thought about releasing it as part of an album. We do have more songs coming up in the future with Sayuri and more collaborations with artists soon – we haven’t decided if they’ll be on an album yet though.
What was the inspiration behind the song?
Kyze Music: I was just messing around on my digital audio workstation (DAW) and I made a beautiful flute melody, which I then converted into a reggaeton version, and sent it off to Jizzy. Jizzy liked it and said, “Let’s switch it up and make it more electronic”, so we experimented with the track using our traditional Sri Lankan sounds and mixed it with some electronic synthesisers and came out with this masterpiece.
What has being a musician during an economic crisis taught you?
Jizzy: It’s hard because our industry is small. When we create pop, R&B, or rap music, it might have a market, but for EDM, it’s not huge. So, surviving by making EDM is a nightmare.
The frustration of not having fuel to travel is the worst – as far as I know most artists love to go out; not only to have fun, but also to listen to the surroundings. Whenever I travel by bus or when riding a car, me and my boys used to play music on Spotify; I miss those moments. On the bus, my favourite spot is the rear-left corner seat, wearing headphones, playing my favourite songs seated in that backseat while watching everything passing by from the little window gave me, well, it would give me so many ideas! So, yes it’s hard to survive, but we have to keep moving.
Do you have anything else coming up this year?
Jizzy: I have so many releases coming up with very popular artists, and they are already done. I’m just waiting for the best moment to release them.
Kyze Music: I have another release with Jizzy, as well as a few with friends from bands like MADIAD and NEULOWS. Since it’s summer, we have some gigs lined up as well, so we can’t wait to hit the clubs again.
