Launched in early 2020 during the first lockdown, Dessert Island is a cloud kitchen delivering premium quality desserts to your doorstep.
Founder and CEO Thisura Goonawardena is no stranger to the food industry, and he has put his experience to the test with Dessert Island, where his efforts really shine through in a product that is evidently of great quality.
He said that the concept behind Dessert Island was to offer a premium product encased in a sustainable model, commenting that they have catered their product to suit the market place, as they offer special prices for supermarket purchases, and offer different, more accessible packaging. Thisura said that he felt there was a demand for premium products on supermarket shelves, and that is what they have provided.
Dessert Island’s signature biscuit pudding jars are not only available for delivery, but are also available for purchase in supermarkets including SPAR supermarket and Glomark supermarket. Thisura shared that just before this most recent lockdown they had just partnered with Keells.
While the desserts in glass jars concept isn’t anything new, with many cloud kitchens adopting a similar tactic to reach their customers, Dessert Island appears to be doing it just a bit better than most, as they have been able to produce commercially while maintaining its quality.
According to Thisura, their product differentiates itself with the ingredients used, incorporating a French recipe, using fresh eggs and high-quality chocolate. They’ve managed to set themselves apart. He also pointed out that in case of direct orders, their desserts are “made to order”, therefore, while the items do have a two-week shelf life, and have no added preservatives, each order is made upon your request.
While we are attempting to come off a little nonchalant about the packaging due to its growing prevalence, we must appreciate the sustainable glass packaging; it’s always incredibly convenient when deliveries come in reusable packaging like glass. They are very nice to look at and it’s a great new addition to your spice cabinet.
The Dessert Island chocolate biscuit pudding (CBP) jars come in four different flavours – classic chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, strawberry white chocolate, and black forest chocolate. While we were quite excited to try out one of each, the realities of our pandemic situation has posed some challenges for the business as they are facing some difficulty in sourcing their ingredients. Despite this slight hiccup, we decided to go ahead with what they’ve got; the classic chocolate (Rs. 390) and the black forest (Rs. 450).
The desserts are available in several quantities; the 110 g jar for a single serving, 400 g tubs which have three to four servings, and the newly introduced 1.5 kg dessert tub which is for about 12 servings. They also have smaller single size cups priced at Rs. 100, however there is a minimum number per order.
The 110 g jar, while esthetically pleasing, originally felt a little small. However, considering the price you pay, the product is incredibly rich and vibrant and once you take your first bite, you know exactly what you’ve paid for.
We’ve complained several times about how CBP is far too simple of a dessert to be sold at these ludicrous prices, but in this one instance we digress; the biscuit pudding was delicious, the chocolate was amazing, the consistency was flawless, and the biscuit-to-chocolate ratio is the best we’ve had. Same goes for the black forest which comes with dark cherries, whipped cream, chocolate biscuit, shaved chocolate, and their incredible chocolate cream. This one has even more pizzazz. Dessert Island has managed to perfectly elevate a deceptively simple dessert.
If you want to feel like a million bucks eating biscuit pudding from a jar, then you’ve definitely got to try this out.
