Perhaps the most stressful aspect of a vacation is packing your bags; it’s very easy to simply forget to add in important items, or you may not even think a certain item would come in handy. The Morning Brunch has got you covered – we spoke to some long-time travel influencers to see what they think is the most essential item when travelling and why. Once your outfits have been planned and packed, it’s time to focus on other things – particularly those items you absolutely can’t forget. Consider this your go-to checklist for any trip.
#‘It’s my phone’: Chatti and Achintha
Local travel duo Chatti and Achintha both stated that for them they’re going to have to go with their phone. “I’m obsessed with capturing beautiful places, sceneries, and the experiences we share together!” Chatti told us. Adding to this, Achintha also mentioned that the two of them always come back home from a vacation and look at all the pictures and videos they’d captured while travelling. They noted: “It’s like bringing a piece of your trip back with you.”
Apart from that, they also use their phones for directions, restaurant recommendations, etc. so it’s definitely a handy piece of technology to have; it has the whole world at the touch of a button, and therefore, they added, it is definitely the most essential item to the both of them when travelling.

‘It would be the camera’: Kavindi Athapattu
While Kavindi Athapattu expressed that it is a very tough choice to pick the most essential item, she stated that for her, it would be the camera. “When you travel, you want to have that memory with you for a long time. Sometimes while our minds may forget, photographs are eternal, so you can always look back at it and reminisce about the good times,” she explained.
She also added that she is someone that enjoys taking glamorous-looking pictures on her vacation, whether it be for her personal use or to boost her travel blog, so the camera is an absolute must for her. “Having it on me has helped me capture some moments I can only describe as magical. These are sights that will one day evoke a deep sense of nostalgia and it is one that you will not miss,” she commented.

‘Mine is the GoPro cam’: Hiran Samarasekara
Although it is very similar to a camera, Hiran Samarasekara named his most essential item when travelling to be a GoPro camera. “It’s easy to use, even for hard use, no matter if I’m in the rain, mountains, ocean, or rivers. GoPros can handle water and snow without blinking. They can handle bumps and knocks well by themselves, and even more so if you put them in a protective housing. And there’s a huge range of accessories available for them,” he told us. Since the GoPro camera is no larger than the size of one’s palm, this makes it virtually the easiest camera on the planet to manipulate and transport.
Samarasekara finds that it helps him to capture all his adventures when he’s travelling.

The travelling bag
Harsha and Gihani, another travel duo named their most important item to be their travelling bag. “It helps us carry our most essential goods when we travel, so obviously it is the most essential item,” Gihani commented. Usually with just a single compartment for all of your daily essentials, a travel tote has smaller sections well equipped to carry all of your travel essentials with ease.
“If it’s a good quality bag, then your items are protected; and some bags can even withstand rain and other adverse weather,” Harsha explained, adding that the bag can make or break your vacation.

‘I always take my power bank with me’: Luxsan Tharmarajah
The most essential item, apart from the basic necessities, for Luxsan Tharmarajah is his power bank which he usually takes with him wherever he goes – even if it’s not a vacation. “With many of my solo travels, I find it the most essential item to have with me as a safety tool,” he told us, explaining that since exploring can be tricky, having a fully charged electronic device is vital for travelling.
And, as everyone has stated, we travel with more electronics and gadgets than ever before and have become reliant on them when we’re on the road. “Keeping your devices charged while traveling can be a pain and there are countless travel situations where a low or dead battery can turn into a major inconvenience,” Tharmarajah told us, adding that he thinks a power bank should be an auto-include on virtually every trip.
