In honour of celebrating over 50 years of fine hospitality and wholesome healing, Ayuwanna by Barberyn – an urban retreat providing authentic ayurveda treatments – is launching an open day event titled “Journey to healing with Barberyn” which will be held this Saturday (26) and Sunday (27).
Brunch spoke to Ruvi Rodrigo from Ayuwanna by Barberyn to learn more about what to expect at the event. Sharing some insight on the place itself, she stated that Barberyn are pioneers of ayurveda tourism in Sri Lanka, having established its ayurveda medical centre, Ayuwanna, within the Prana Lounge premises in Colombo 7.
“The open day event has been curated to educate and create awareness about the ancient holistic healing system of ayurveda, where practitioners utilise therapies and treatments to cure the root cause of disease,” she told us, when talking about the event. Sharing more details, she informed us that the event will feature an informative and insightful exhibition on the concepts of ayurveda and its healing mechanisms and the treatments available at Barberyn.
“There will be numerous ayurveda-related workshops, live consultations by Barberyn doctors, as well as lectures by prominent figures in the holistic wellness industry,” she added.
The first session to be held this Saturday will be titled “The Ayurveda Journey: A passage through the knowledge of life” (ayur – life, veda – science or knowledge) conducted by a skilled ayurveda practitioner from Barberyn. This session will be interactive in terms of ayurvedic consultation and how to begin your ayurveda journey. Rodrigo added that through this, they hope to encourage more guests to take up ayurvedic practices by showing them what exactly it entails and how to go about it.
Once guests are more familiar with the basic concept of ayurveda, they will move on to the next session titled “The integrated union of Ayurveda and Yoga” conducted by renowned Rekha Krishnamoorthy of Sathya Yoga and Wellness. During this, they will explore the truest essence of yoga and its benefits as a holistic, wellbeing practice with ayurveda.
Shortly after, guests will be treated to an insight into abhyanga (self-massage with oil) by the Chief Therapist from Barberyn. This will feature an interactive session demonstrating self-massage and the application of oil on the face, head, and neck, so their guests will be versed in practising simple ayurvedic techniques in the comfort of their home.
Lastly, guests will explore ayurveda with a film screening of a fascinating documentary about the ancient holistic health system of ayurveda. “This programme is to promote the use of ayurveda in day-to-day life; it is not to simply promote Barberyn. We are looking at what ayurvedic practices can do for our tourism industry and want to make wellness tourism a main attraction of Sri Lanka,” Rodrigo stated.
Sunday’s session will integrate everything learned on Saturday and go into more detail on how one can enter an ayurvedic lifestyle.
The event will begin by discovering the healing power of medicinal forests and preservation of ayurveda medicinal plants – a lesson conducted by Prof. Piyal Marasinghe, where guests will learn about the fascinating variety of indigenous plants and its unique preservation methods.
“We will have a session for kids as well on Sunday. It will be an interactive activity on making your own medicinal pouch (beheth pottiniya) conducted by Anusha Samarasinghe and will allow kids to get creative and use the knowledge from the previous lessons to build a medicine bag specifically made for themselves,” Rodrigo commented.
The two-day event will conclude with heart-centred mediation conducted by Shobana Cooke, who will highlight the importance of finding love, peace, and compassion within oneself, especially during these trying times.
She also added that ayurveda treatments are a holistic system and generally start with an internal purification process followed by a special diet, herbal and massage therapies, as well as yoga and meditation, along with follow up treatments to bring you back to balance during these uncertain times. “‘Journey to healing with Barberyn’ is free and open to all ages and we invite you to embark on a life-changing journey of healing with Barberyn,” she concluded.
