- Nushki Fazal on what makes his restaurant a strong contender for your next cheat-day fix

If you’re looking for a spot for your next cheat-day meal, we’ve got just the place for you. Fatty Patty, located down Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, Dehiwala is bound to satisfy all your cravings. With an extensive menu featuring burgers, shawarmas, pasta, kottu, and many more, all made fresh in house with some of their own spice blends and sauces, this quaint joint is a definite must-try.
In conversation with the owner of Fatty Patty Nushki Fazal on how this café came to be, The Morning Brunch learnt that when he was in school, his mother used to run a successful chain of restaurants.
“More than the success, it was her passion and how she was all smiles when dealing with her restaurants that really struck me, which is why I also chose the same career path,” he told us.
Once he had decided to embark on this journey, he studied culinary arts in the UK, which in turn helped him infuse London street food into the dishes at Fatty Patty.
“Even in the names of the dishes, you can see the influence London had on me, which is one factor that I would say makes Fatty Patty unique,” he added.
Variety of dishes
Speaking of the dishes, we actually had the opportunity to try a variety of them. We tried the chilli hot dog, steaky fries, creamy chicken pasta, beef kottu, fiery chicken, and a chicken gyro. What immediately caught our eye, right after being caught by the aroma of freshly-cooked food wafting around the restaurant, was how beautifully the plating was done. The dishes seemed almost professionally plated, and were immediately a feast for the eyes. Aside from looks, the flavours too, were unmatched.
The sauce that coated the fiery chicken brought the heat; the perfect snack for us Sri Lankans who enjoy extreme spice. We loved the creamy chicken pasta as well; they certainly did not skimp out on the cream, and served a generous portion of creamy pasta goodness. The plating of the chicken gyro too was fun, bringing in a DIY element. We had to assemble the gyro with the vegetable, meat, and sauce presented to us, making the sandwich that much better.
We also must highlight that each dish came with an incredibly generous portion of meat – they certainly did not skimp out on a single ingredient.
Hopeful during challenging times
Given the current situation in the country, we asked Nushki how he’s able to maintain his quality and quantity, to which he affirmed that it’s been very economically challenging and that they just relocated to cut down costs and overheads.
“We were closed for a period of time when the gas shortage was high. Things seem to be falling into place now, I can feel it with the volume of customers visiting my outlet,” he observed, adding that he is just praying that all uncertainty is put to rest and that they are provided with the required material to carry out operations to the fullest potential.
Given that some of the dishes may be on the pricier side, Nushki informed us that they have a few ongoing promotions as well. At present, they have a double-delight promo going on that you can check out on their Instagram page, or head on over to UberEats, where they have a new promotion every day.
When talking about what plans he had for the restaurant, Nushki told us he prefers to take it one day at a time, especially given the unpredictability in the country. Although he did hint at expansion and growth in the near future if the right opportunity presented itself. Right now, he simply wishes to follow in his mother’s footsteps, pursue his passion for the culinary arts, and keep putting smiles on his customers’ faces.
