- Arixx Saviour on electronic music in SL
Nadun Anjana Saviour-Fernando, who goes by the stage name Arixx Saviour, pursued his childhood dream of a musical career, and right now, is one of the most popular multi-style house DJs in Sri Lanka. Born in 1997, in the outskirts of Negombo, Arixx followed his love for music, spending his childhood experimenting with different arts, and adding a personal touch to his creations.
Later, he bought his first console, and with his first attempt at mashing up two hit records, the magic of his music was revealed. As a DJ, Arixx has become known for his magnificent basslines and festival-ready tracks, which alternate between hard grooves and crowd-jumping pieces. In 2016, he decided to take his love for music to the next level and started producing. He signed up with three international labels, dropped singles on some radio stations, and garnered a lot of international support for his melancholic vibe. Arixx’s music isn’t just magnetic, but also powerful. After much hard work, and two years spent learning to produce, in 2018, he put out his first single.
In conversation with Brunch, he told us that the biggest challenge he faced throughout the year was the lack of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) enthusiasts in Sri Lanka. “So acquiring fans throughout the journey was quite difficult. I also live far away from Colombo so connecting with the community was also a challenge.”
Although that was an obstacle he had to overcome in the past, right now he believes the EDM music field is going pretty great because there are some music streaming platforms available in Sri Lanka, and there are so many talented upcoming artists here.
“More people here are used to listening to music on streaming platforms; this reduces music piracy and benefits the artists in the industry.” According to him, Sri Lankans will be able to listen to more genres and some amazing music in the future.
Sharing some advice to his fellow aspiring musicians, he shared that no matter what happens in life, one should take everything in a positive way, be strong, and never give up.
“Don’t let any obstacle in life put you down and for all of the music fans out here, please stop pirating music and start listening to music through streaming platforms,” he stated.
Right now, with everything happening in the country, the music industry has taken a bit of a hit. Arixx noted that when it comes to the music industry, it never goes down – people will never stop listening to music in any case, as music gives them emotional support. But on the other hand, he observed, events like musical shows, festivals, and gigs will be limited because of the current situation and this will affect musicians badly, but he advised all musicians to make use of the situation and use the time to create new music.
Arixx has many plans for this year, including a few festivals lined up, and is excited to get back on stage after the forced hiatus the industry had to face. He promises new music and more exciting news, urging his fans to keep an eye out for what’s to come.
